Rams eSports team state champions in SMITE

The Greene County e-sports team placed first in the state in SMITE, topping Iowa Falls – Alden 2-0 June 1.

Other teams playing SMITE were Central Decatur, Lone Tree, Osage, Belmond – Klemme, Roland – Story and West Delaware. Greene County beat Roland-Story in the semi-finals to advance to the finals against Iowa Falls – Alden.

The Iowa High School Esports Association (IAHSEA) sanctions esports with 90 member schools. The IAHSEA holds three seasons. During the fall season teams played Rainbow 6 Siege, Smash Brothers or League of Legends. The winter season featured Overwatch 2 and Rocket League, and the spring season games were SMITE and Mario Kart 8.

SMITE teammates are (front, from left) Layne Carstens, Myren Keller, Caleb Most, Charlie Cooklin, Brayden Kokenge and Aaron Knoll. Coach Conner Mueller is in back.

Not all team members play every season or every game. SMITE coach is Conner Mueller.

This is the second year of esports at Greene County.

The mission of IAHSEA is “to support safe and competitive environments for Iowa high school students while promoting team building, communication and critical thinking through esports programs. These programs will provide an opportunity for more students to feel connected to school as well as provide future opportunities in the fields of technology and esports.”
